Despite being small in size, Andorra has one of the best health systems in the world. With a population of about 70,000 inhabitants, it has a single hospital which has the capacity and is fully prepared to provide optimal care to citizens.

A Brief History

Opened in 1994, the Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital was founded to combine the two clinics existing in the principality at that time and thus provide a better service to the population. These clinics were the Santa Coloma Clinic, created in 1989, and the Verge de Meritxell Clinic, built in 1971. The latter still remains open today as an outpatient hospital.

With its consolidated leadership since 1986 (managing the two clinics existing at that time), the Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital today is still governed by the Andorran Health Care Service (SAAS  in its Catalan abbreviation), a semi-public, financially and legally autonomous body, which is responsible for the management and administration of all health care resources.

Facilities and Services at the Hospital

Facilities and Services at the Hospital

As mentioned above, the Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital is divided into two buildings: an outpatient hospital, where external appointments and more basic care is provided, and a second building where more advanced care is provided.

Thus, the hospital has six important areas of medical care: a medical speciality service, surgical specialities, a traumatology and orthopaedic surgery service, a gynaecology and obstetrics service, a paediatrics and neonatology service and finally, a mental health service.

The building also has an intensive care ward with a capacity for 20 patients, an accident and emergency area (on the first floor) and other specialised areas. The hospital has a 3-storey car park, a cafeteria-restaurant, a large terrace area, toilet facilities and vending machines providing snacks and drinks, among many other facilities.

As regards the rooms, the Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital prioritises patients' privacy and intimacy, so all its rooms are individual and have a TV service, their own toilet and shower, built-in wardrobes an armchair and a sofa for the patient’s companion to spend the night if required.

Also noteworthy is the centre's highly qualified team, who offer friendly, fully personalised care to each patient, making the hospital admission experience a little more pleasant.

Agreements with Hospitals in Neighbouring Countries

Finally, it should be noted that even though our hospital is perfectly able and qualified to deal with any condition, it has an emergency medical helicopter service to transport patients to the nearest hospital in around 30 minutes for more serious operations when required. Usually these are hospitals in Toulouse or Barcelona.
