Mineral-rich groundwater is used for thermal therapies. Escaldes-Engordany has a large fault through which thermal water flows. This natural spring is known as the "Roc du Metge" spring, named after the French doctor who owned the land where the fault is located. As it cannot easily be built on, the city council purchased the land in 1987 and decided to exploit the thermal waters by building the Centro Termolúdico Caldea spa.

The thermal waters of Escaldes-Engordany are made up of sulphurous water containing sodium. As the water is rich in sulphur and oily, it is home to thermal plankton that sprouts at 68-71ºC, making it one of the hottest water sources in Europe. If you pay a visit, you will be able to get close up and touch the water for yourself.

15% of the tourist trips around the world are made for health reasons. Were you looking for an excuse to go on a trip? Now you have one! Stress is very common these days. Work, responsibilities and the frenetic rhythm of day-to-day life can be a source of strain and physical discomfort that we often do not know how to manage.

This is when your body, through insomnia, anxiety or headaches starts to warn you that you need to do something about it.

Thermal treatments, which are offered in spas or thermal centres, are also a good cure for many other conditions, such as chronic inflammation, lumbago, joint pain, rheumatism, arthrosis, circulatory problems, fibromyalgia or menopause, among others.

Thermal water, used therapeutically in baths, inhalation and irrigation, has great advantages:

  • It increases oxygenation to the body.
  • It improves tissue nutrition.
  • It helps to control hormones.
  • It normalises the nervous system.
  • It increases the body's metabolism.
  • It stimulates parts of the digestive system.

Thermal therapies can be a very pleasant experience, with water acting as the main component. Some such therapies include immersion baths, pressure jets, thermal circuits and a variety of showers. Other thermal treatments, such as clay or wax masks, oil and herbal massages, physiotherapy exercises, the application of aerosols and aromatherapy, the Turkish bath, the Finnish sauna or the steam room are no less appealing.

The benefits of thermal treatments are innumerable. The heat from the water, saunas and hot stone massages (geothermal therapy) is used to stimulate the circulatory system, relaxing the muscles and alleviating the symptoms of cardiovascular diseases, back pain and other muscle aches.

The minerals in the water and salts improve joint function, rheumatism, arthrosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, skin conditions such as eczema and allergies, digestive and respiratory system conditions, not forgetting the positive effects in those who suffer from stress and fatigue.

One of the fantastic places where you can enjoy these spectacular treatments is at the Hotel Carlemany in Andorra, a charming place where you can enjoy the thermal waters, even in the bathroom in your own room.
