The Museo de la Miniatura, in Andorra (Museum of Miniatures), is an invaluable attraction for those who love art, particularly for people who admire great care for detail. This museum, located in Ordino, exhibits a broad variety of works by Ukrainian artist Nicolai Siadristy, considered as one of the best miniature artists in the world. It's in the Maragda building, on Carrer Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer.
What can you see at the Museum of Miniatures in Ordino?
The Museum of Miniatures exhibits a vast collection of micro-miniatures made of fine materials such as gold and platinum, as well as common materials like paper, fruit seeds or grains of rice, all of them hand-made by Nicolai Siadristy. There are a great number of Russian Dolls: the smallest of them are a true wonder of miniature craftsmanship. The collection also includes crucifixes, religious art and a vast array of other works. To fully appreciate the quality of these items, in certain cases visitors may (and should) use a microscope: you will find incredible works like the “tavern on a grain of salt” and the “camel train passing through the eye of a hurricane”, and many more.
Even though the Museum of Miniatures is small, as are the items on display, it has managed to fit in a small audiovisual area that projects images of the life and works of Nicolai Siadristy to help visitors understand how difficult his art is to make.
Guided and unguided tours are available. Their duration is approximately 20 minutes. Guided tours are available in English, Spanish, French and Catalan. The maximum number of persons per group is 25. The museum is adapted for people with reduced mobility. Considerable discounts are available for visitors with a PassMuseu discount card. The museum can easily be reached by car, as it's on Ordino's main access road, beside the CG-3. If you're in Andorra la Vella, you can also take the bus, as line L6 travels to Ordino and is an equally convenient option.
As well as the ticket office, the ground floor also houses a shop where you can buy all kinds of miniature souvenirs.
Other cultural activities in Ordino
The Museum of Miniatures is one of Ordino's most interesting cultural options, but it's not the only one. This small town is also the home of several other museums, such as Andorra's Postal Museum and the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit Museum. The former covers our country's postal history while the latter is a chance for visitors to admire the residence of one Andorra's most influential families, which owned a great deal of the country's foundries.
Nearby, in the parish of Canillo, you'll find another one of Andorra's cultural gems: the Santuario de Meritxell Basilica. It's the country's most important Christian temple, as it houses Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra.
