Open Museum “Roques al Carrer”

Pl. de la Rotonda, s/n - Andorra la Vella (Andorra la Vella)

The “Roques al Carrer” Open Museum is made up of several stops that will show you ten buildings that form part of the city's “granite architecture”. You will discover the key features of this architectural style and get to understand the context in which it emerged and the subsequent boom.

The tour starts at Plaça Príncep Benlloch in Andorra la Vella.

Granite as an architectural style emerged in Andorra in the early 1930s and continued until the 1960s. Granite took a leading role in this era, becoming a decorative element of facades, corners and openings, clearly searching for symmetry.

This architecture reflects the transformation that the Principality underwent in the 20th century, moving from a rural to a more urban society.

The first highlighted example of urban granite architecture is Plaça Guillemó in Andorra la Vella. Other buildings of note that were built with this material are the hydroelectric power plant (FEDA), the Rosaleda hotel (now the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport), and the former Meritxell College of Escaldes-Engordany.

If you did not know about this phenomenon and have just discovered it, we invite you to take the tour to hear more about this fascinating story firsthand. You can find more information here.
