Museums for a journey back to the past

Immerse yourself in the stories our ancestors are waiting to tell you: what life was like in 19th-century Andorra, the country's people and customs... Learn first-hand about the political and cultural evolution of a country that remained rooted to its customs, isolated from the major developments that transformed bourgeois society in the nearby cities either side of the Pyrenees.

The electrification of homes, the building of the first road and with it the arrival of the first cars and tourists.

Andorra is home to a number of museums and monuments where you can learn first hand about life in the Principality in days gone by. There are 20 museums that will give you an insight into our roots, history and secrets.

The wide range of museums includes four visitor centres where you can learn about Andorra’s rural environment as well as part of its past. You’ll also learn about the iron-working processes that were practised in the Pyrenees, the meaning of some of the icons that form part of our 12th century murals, and how our natural landscapes were formed.

  • Farga Rossell is a working example of a Catalan forge dating back to the 19th century with its structure still intact and showing how the mineral was transformed into iron ingots.
  • The Casa de la Muntanya (mountain house) offers you an interactive way to explore the mountain: in the Discovery Zone you’ll find a variety of tactile elements plus a virtual reality area with screenings, where you can experience the mountain and all of its natural elements.
  • The mola (mill) and serradora (sawmill) of Cal Pal date back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and have been converted into visitor centres where you can see a water-powered saw cutting wood at the sawmill and observe wheat being transformed into flour at the mill.
  • Lastly, at Portal de la Vall (valley gateway) you’ll find all the information you need on the Vall del Madriu, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004 and is one of the largest valleys in Andorra.
