Carnival in Encamp

CARNAVAL D’ENCAMP 2019

02 van March - 06 van March

In Encamp for the Carnival the satire and revelry are the stars in the everyday life of the parish.

Encamp’s Carnival celebrations, the most boisterous of the principality, are organised by the local festival commission and are based around a satirical view of current events. The traditional hanging of His Majesty the Carnival King sets the tone and theme for other performances that take place over the days of revelry and fun in the town.

Highlights of these unique Carnival celebrations include the Trial of the Smugglers, which has been staged on Carnival Sunday since the 1950s. The traditional figure of the smuggler is found throughout the Pyrenees and has led to a variety of performances and activities.

The Ball de l’Ossa (The Dance of the Bear), declared part of Andorra’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is another of the unique events of Encamp's Carnival celebrations. Although its origins are uncertain, it’s often traced back to the Middle Ages and has been celebrated since the mid-20th century.

The final act to close the festivities is the Operation on the Carnival King, but, despite their efforts, the Carnival medical team fail to revive him and he ends up being burned.
