Charcoal: the poor man’s black gold

2025-06-02 - 2025-11-30

With a direct and committed gaze, Pascal Maitre portrays the lives of more than 2.5 billion people who still use charcoal to cook or heat water in the absence of modern, clean and accessible energy.

His photographs highlight the consequences of this dependence: deforestation, CO₂ emissions and the fragility of an energy system that falls mainly on families in Africa and Asia, in already vulnerable social contexts.

The exhibition stems from his desire to denounce this reality and, at the same time, to open a space for dialogue on equitable access to energy. It also establishes a link with Andorra’s history, which before the arrival of electricity relied heavily on charcoal, especially for the forges.

Organised in collaboration with FEDA Cultura, the French Embassy in Andorra and the photojournalism festival VISA pour l’image, the exhibition brings to the Principality an international visual culture committed to social reflection.
