This celebration has its roots in the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, and is surrounded by legend and mystery.
The origin, the name, the number of kings and their method of transport has changed throughout history until the modern-day festivity and celebration, which is held in countries with a Catholic tradition. The parades that take place on the evening of 5th January, the eve of the festival, when they are welcomed to each town and city are a recent tradition, given that the first one took place in Alcoy in 1885.
It is celebrated on 6th January, combining the Feast of the Epiphany and the visit of the Magi, the latter now the most popular meaning of the day in Catholic countries. It is also widely celebrated in several Latin American countries.
In Andorra, the Three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar and their whole entourage of pages and letter-carriers visit all the parishes in the Principality.
