Grandvalira and Andorra in general are preparing to host again, in March 2023, the biggest sporting event ever organized in the country: the Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals. This is the last meeting of the top level alpine skiing circuit organized by the FIS (International Ski Federation) and brings together the 25 best professional skiers from each discipline in the female and male categories, for seven days.
We tell you everything you need to know about this event: what it is, where and when it takes place, the most outstanding participants... You can’t miss it!
What is the FIS Ski World Cup?
This competition, also known as the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals, is one of the most important winter sports competitions in the world, second only to the Winter Olympic Games, which are held every four years, and the World Ski Championships, which are held every two years. The events are held during the winter months in dozens of different resorts, with a points system in four disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, super-G and downhill. The finals, the only time of the season when all the men’s and women’s events take place in the same resort, are the crowning glory. That’s precisely what’s happening in Andorra this winter!
Where and when the finals will be held
The resort hosting the Finals of the Ski World Cup is Grandvalira, more specifically the Soldeu and El Tarter sectors, on two of the best competition slopes. The first is the Avet slope, in the Soldeu sector of Grandvalira, whose 1200 metres and 70% maximum gradient are ideal for slalom and giant slalom. The second is the Àliga slope, in the El Tarter sector of Grandvalira, for the two speed disciplines of alpine skiing (downhill and super-G), and the only Parallel team race of the World Cup season. The event will take place from 13 to 19 March 2023.
Who is taking part in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals 2023?
In Grandvalira you will find the 25 best professional skiers, both in the male and female categories, as well as the junior champions of each discipline. In the men's category, the Swiss Marco Odermatt stands out, king of the giant slalom and a real dominator of the competition, World Cup champion and Olympic champion in Beijing 2022. A situation similar to that of the American Mikaela Shiffrin, who stands as the great dominatrix of the general classification, achieving great results in all the disciplines of alpine skiing.
In addition to these two great aces, who few doubt qualify as the best skiers in the world, their opponents also promise to put on a great show and try to spring a surprise. In the men's category, the young Norwegian Lucas Braathen, his teammate Henrik Kristoffersen and the great favorite for the speed races, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, stand out among others; without forgetting the Andorran Joan Verdú, who opts with good prospects to qualify for the finals. In the women's category stand out the Swedish Sara Hector, current Olympic champion in giant slalom, the Italian queen of speed, Sofia Goggia, the Slovak Petra Vlhová and the Swiss Wendy Holdener.
