Exhibition of the photographic works of Vivian Maier
The Government of Andorra’s exhibition hall is showcasing a selection of works by the American photographer Vivian Dorothy Maier (New York, 1926 – Chicago, 2009). A nanny by profession but with a vocation for street photography, over the course of her life Maier took more than 150,000 photos. Secretive and extremely reserved, she never showed the images to anybody, and nor did she ever see any of them in printed form. Her enormous body of work was discovered by accident shortly after her death, and went to receive widespread acclaim.
Maier’s images mostly depict normal people going about their daily lives in the city streets of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, where she lived and worked as a nanny (although she also took photographs in the different countries she visited around the world).
This exhibition, titled “The Self-Portrait and Its Double”, focuses on this specific aspect of her work and features around 100 images in which Maier depicts her own enigmatic figure. It is a highly personal and intimate vision of an artist who is widely admired and considered a benchmark for street photography in the second half of the 20th century.
