‘Kintsugi’ by Joan Fontcuberta

Dal 26-02-2021 al 02-05-2021

‘Kintsugi’ by Joan Fontcuberta is a photography exhibition organised by the Andorran Ministry of Culture and Sports, on display until 2 May.

The temporary exhibition hall of the Museu Fàbrica Reig houses 38 images by the Barcelona-based photographer, artist, teacher, essayist, critic and art promoter Joan Fontcuberta.

‘Kintsugi’ is part of a reflection on the evolution and physical deterioration of images over time, which Fontcuberta has been working on for years. Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique for repairing broken ceramic pieces by mending fractures with gold wire. With this as his source of inspiration, the artist presents a selection of photographs from the Trauma series, sourced from photographic archives from around the world, including the National Archive of Andorra.

These are damaged images: old positives or negatives, physically or chemically damaged, in which time and memory battle it out. Far from concealing them, the scars stand out, showing off their beauty as witnesses to the experiences they have suffered.

To mark the occasion of the exhibition, Joan Fontcuberta has created an ‘artist's book’ published by the Government of Andorra and the prestigious publishing house RM, which can be purchased at the exhibition from 31 March.

Joan Fontcuberta, a graduate in Information Sciences, is Professor of Audiovisual Communication Studies at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts). As a photographer, he has been recognised with numerous awards, such as the prestigious Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography.

Place and dates: Temporary exhibition hall of the Museu Fàbrica Reig in Sant Julià de Lòria, until 2 May. Free entry.
