"Piero and Queen Pitavola" is one of the routes of the small Macarulla magic trails and is located on the path of the Collet dels Colls, a unique agricultural area at the foot of the village of Ordino.

The route introduces youngsters to hiking through a variety of games and activities, in order to discover the habitat of butterflies in the Principality. On this occasion, families are invited to become butterflies for a day.

Piero is a caterpillar who dreams of becoming a butterfly, but to make his dream come true he must find Queen Pitavola. Only she can transform caterpillars into beautiful butterflies. He needs your help to achieve this and to fulfil a very important mission: to make the most beautiful plants and flowers grow in the orchards, paths, meadows and forests to help care for nature in Andorra.

The route is designed for kids and families to have fun learning about the most well-known butterfly species in Andorra: their habitat, their diet, how they move around and their life cycle. A guide will be there to play and help with the activities.

The starting point of the route is on the Camí Ral, at the dels Paliquerons bridge where the Collet dels Colls path begins. This is a simple circular route of just over two kilometres which runs through an agricultural area, but is somewhat difficult on the ascent and descent in the section that goes through the forest. This section can be more difficult for children who are not used to walking on slopes.

At the end of the route there is a walking area along the Valira del Nord river where you can take a stroll and stop for a break before calling it a day. It is worth visiting the small hermitage of Santa Bàrbara from where you can contemplate the vineyards that surround the valley. The proximity of the route to the village of Ordino makes it ideal to complement the route with a visit to the historic centre and cultural institutions such as the Areny-Plandolit House Museum and the Miniatures Museum, among other tourist attractions in the Ordino valley.

After finishing the route, you can download the diploma accrediting boys and girls as “Macarullas” from the Visitandorra website.

In the tourist information offices you’ll find pamphlets for €1 to explore “Piero and Queen Pitavola” and other routes as a family. One additional feature of the Macarulla little magical trails is that the play equipment and “hidden” surprises are conceived and designed by local artists and artisans using high-quality materials that are environmentally friendly, so they integrate perfectly into the landscape.

The Macarulla routes run along mountain paths, so you always need to be equipped with appropriate footwear and clothing and take the corresponding precautions, especially for the safety of the littlest members of the family.
