Hiking: itinerari de l'estany blau

This is a technical route of high difficulty, 21 km long and a climb of 1,150 metres, which takes around 9 hours.

The Estany Blau has an area of 2.1 ha. This hiking route takes us up the Madriu Valley with a large variety of natural habitats constituting one of the principality’s ecosystems. This is a circular circuit which starts and finishes at km 6.2 on the road to Engolasters (from Escaldes-Engordany), next to a car park. Here we will find an informative sign indicating the Camí dels Matxos (GR 11), which we will follow. The path levels out on a wide track until the Camí de coll Jovell. At this point, we continue on the left crossing forest areas to the Cap del Agols.

Having crossed this peak and once on our way down, we have an airy view of the Estany Blau, our destination. Following a rest at the lake, we continue our climb towards the Madriu, following the yellow spots. When we get to the GR, we follow it to the Fontverd mountain hut. We continue along the Camí dels Matxos, Coll Jovell and Circuit de les Fonts, where we started the route.

The route starts at point 42° 31' 2",1° 34' 15" on the road to Engolasters.

For your safety, we recommend you do the routes at altitudes of over 1700 metres between the end of June and the end of September.

You will find further details of this and other routes in the Hiking guide Trails of Andorra.
