Interpreters

Maria Rovira (Mataró, Barcelone)

Trained in flamenco, classical and contemporary dance, she began her dance studies at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. She studied contemporary dance at the Conservatoire International de la Danse in Paris, at the school of Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham in New York and worked with the masters of the Folkwang Schule in Essen, including Pina Bausch.

In 1985, Rovira created Trànsit Dansa in Mataró (Barcelona), one of the pioneering modern dance companies in Spain with international impact. In 1998 she was awarded the National Dance Prize for her great national and international artistic career. In 2012 she became the artistic director of the Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia in Medellín (Colombia).

In addition to Trànsit Dansa's creations, Rovira also has a career as an independent choreographer that has led her to work with several international companies.

In recent years she has developed a number of choreographies for Carlos Acosta's company; she has choreographed the film Yuli: The Carlos Acosta Story, directed by Icíar Bollaín and inspired by the life of the famous Cuban dancer. Again with the company Acosta Danza and dancers from Barcelona, she was commissioned to produce Los ballets de Maria Rovira for the Festival Grec, where it was a resounding success and was recognised as the best dance piece of 2017, a work which marked the launch of the Crea Dance Company.

Crea Dance Company

The Crea Dance Company by María Rovira was launched in 2017 with the premiere of Los ballets de María Rovira en Cuba at the Festival Grec in Barcelona.

In 2018, the company presented Carmina Burana together with the Orquesta del Vallès, co-produced and performed for the first time at the Factoría Cultural de Terrassa, which subsequently went on tour throughout Spain in 2019-20. It was performed in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Mataró, Toledo, Gandía, La Maestranza in Seville, Santander, Albacete, Guadalajara and Huelva.

The production was nominated for a number of Max Awards:

Best choreography and best dance performance: María Rovira
Best male dance performer: Kevin Martínez
Best female dance performer: Aina Gargallo

Carmina Burana won the Audience Award at the Teatro de las Rojas in Toledo. In 2019 Mozart's Requiem was produced and premiered, again with the Orquesta del Vallés, in co-production with the Centro Cultural de Terrassa. It was performed in the cities of Valencia, Toledo, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Mataró, Granollers and several municipalities of the Community of Madrid.

The piece won the Butaca 2020 award for best dance show, and the Audience Award at the Teatro de las Rojas in Toledo.
