Posters of the Civil War in Catalonia - CAEE

From 12-02-2021 to 03-04-2021

The CAEE (Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre) is exhibiting around 50 copies of original Spanish Civil War posters preserved in the National Archive of Catalonia.

This exhibition puts on public display a selection of images from the Spanish Civil War that form part of the National Archive of Catalonia collection.

Posters were one of the methods of spreading propaganda most used during the conflict. First emerging at the end of the 19th century, this graphic art rose to media splendour during the 20th century in advertising of all kinds; from culture to the spread of slogans to conflicts during war. In other words, they were the channel now occupied by Twitter or WhatsApp and other social networks.

The ‘Posters of the Civil War in Catalonia’ exhibition testifies to the value of posters as a communication tool, whether they call for solidarity, tout political slogans or give recommendations on how to service at the rear. This was all communicated through posters, often with very shocking force or expressiveness. Posters were the simplest and cheapest way to get messages and information to the population quickly.

The CAEE (Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre) exhibition presents works by renowned poster artists such as Carles Fontserè, Josep Subirats, Lorenzo Goñi and Martí Bas, among others.
