La Vuelta 2017
"LA VUELTA" 2017
21 from August - 22 from August
The 72nd edition of the Vuelta a España returns to the Principality of Andorra, with the third stage finish in Andorra la Vella and the start of the fourth in Escaldes-Engordany.
In recent decades, the Vuelta has been a constant presence in our valleys; indeed, it has become one of the most important international sporting events on the Principality’s calendar. Every cycling aficionado will have fond memories of the stage that took place in its entirety within Andorra in September 2015, and this year we will once again welcome the Vuelta—now in its 72nd edition—to our doors. Monday 21 August will see the final of the third stage in Andorra la Vella, while on Tuesday 22 the riders will set off on the fourth stage from Escaldes-Engordany.
Unless there has a been a surprise breakaway beforehand, the finish in Andorra la Vella city centre promises thrills aplenty, given that the final metres of the course offer the perfect opportunity for the sprinters to attack. The route taken by the stage follows the road from the Spanish border through to Sant Julià de Lòria, where the riders will climb the peaks of Alt de la Peguera and La Rabassa. They will continue on to Andorra la Vella, ascending La Comella and then descending alongside Escaldes-Engordany towards the finish line, which is located on Carrer Prat de la Creu.
Although the Vuelta will enter Andorra from the Spanish side, the race will actually arrive in the Principality after having contested its first two stages in France. For only the third time in its history, the Vuelta will begin outside Spain: following Lisbon in 1997 and Assen in 2009, the city chosen to host the official start of this year's race on Saturday 19 August is Nimes. The 2017 edition of the Vuelta consists of 21 stages and will come to a close on 10 September, by which time the riders will have covered some 3,297.7 kilometres. These include 13.8 kilometres of team time trials, 42 kilometres of individual time trials, 50 mountain passes and two rest days.
