Gaston-Louis Roux

GASTON-LOUIS ROUX AND THE AVANT-GARDE

08 from June - 29 from October

The Tobacco Museum presents a sample of works by this little-known French artist, who figured in some of the key pictorial movements of the 20th century.

The exhibition “Gaston-Louis Roux and the Avant-Garde” offers the opportunity to discover a painter who, in the early 1900s, produced a collection of strong, bold artworks in line with the tenets of the Surrealist movement.

Roux rubbed shoulders with artists such as Picasso, Masson, Braque, Gris, Léger and Derain, with whom he also shared a representative, the gallery owner DH Kahnweiler. Blessed with a great sense of humour and a vivid imagination, Roux produced a number of bold, impeccably executed artworks in which he combined biomorphic and geometric shapes and colours.  The works that brought him renown were those he produced during this early period.

However, Roux’s break with Kahnweiler, with whom he had worked for over 30 years, signalled his artistic fall from grace. During this second phase of his career Roux moved towards more traditional figurative painting, thereby losing the high profile he had achieved with his work in the avant-garde style.

“Gaston-Louis Roux and the Avant-Garde” offers a selection of around 40 paintings by this forgotten artist and is open until 29 October 2017. Entry is free of charge.
