In Encamp, the Carnival is one of the most significant festivals of the year, one which is characterised by satire and guarantees a wild time for the whole parish.

Encamp’s Carnival celebrations, the most boisterous of the Principality, are organised by the local festival commission and are based on a satirical view of current events. The traditional hanging of the Carnival King sets the tone and the theme for the other activities and performances that take place over the festival days.

Highlights of these unique Carnival celebrations include the Trial of the Smugglers, which has been staged on Carnival Sunday since the 1950s. The traditional figure of the smuggler is found throughout the Pyrenees and has been the basis for plenty of celebrations.

Another of the distinctive features of the Encamp Carnival is the Ball de l’Ossa (Dance of the Bear), declared as an intangible cultural heritage of Andorra. Although its origins are uncertain, some sources trace it back to the Middle Ages, and it has been celebrated each year since the mid-20th century.

To conclude the festival, the Carnival performs a final operation on the King. Despite their efforts, however, the Carnival's medical team fails to revive him and he ends up being cremated.
