Carnival of Canillo 2017

25 from February - 27 from February

The Carnival of Canillo takes place over the weekend before Carnival Monday on 27 February.

Carnival of canillo 2017

The Carnival of Canillo wouldn't be the same without the Harlequins, the stars of the parade that takes place after the “hanging”, a traditional event where the Carnival King is hanged. The harlequins, young boys and girls from the parish, are responsible for bringing life to all Carnival festivities with their presence. Traditionally, the harlequins were also the protagonists of this celebration in Encamp and Escaldes-Engordany. It used to be only the men who dressed up.

Originally the Canillo harlequin costume was made with two pieces of old pyjamas in light colours, with colourful flowers sewn on, and oak leaves tied to their ankles. This tradition has survived to date, and some costumes, which are passed down from generation to generation, are the source of pride for many families. These characters were the inspiration behind the pair of Gegant giants in the parish, figures measuring over 10 foot tall which have also formed part of the celebrations since 2012.
