The Camí de la Transhumància is a high-mountain route in a stunning rugged landscape. Along the way, you will come across architectural vestiges such as sheepfolds, shepherd’s huts, dry stone huts and stone paths, among others; remnants of transhumance, an activity that remained very much alive until the middle of the last century. Livestock, mainly cows, horses and sheep, continue to graze on the high mountain in summer, from where they are brought down in the autumn to be housed in barns that protect them from the harsh winter weather; this process is known as vertical transhumance. These days, migration to the lowlands in neighbouring countries, known as horizontal transhumance, is a rare occurrence.

Livestock
Along the route you can find several species of livestock adapted to life in high mountains, such as the Andorran brown cow, the Catalan Pyrenean horse, the sheep (Rouge du Rossillon, Xisqueta and Lacona, mainly), and on the French side the Mérens horse, the Tarascon sheep and the Gascon cow.

This link provides all the information about transhumance, as well as the description of all the species that you can find by following this Pyrenean cross-border route.
