Sculptures to bring Kahlo closer to the public

Ten sculptures placed strategically throughout Escaldes-Engordany town centre pay homage to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. With this, the art exhibitions on the street returns to the parish, which for years has been committed to making it available to everyone.

The sculptures were specifically created for the exhibition and are inspired by the figure of Kahlo herself. Standing 1.8 metres tall, they combine realist designs with others that incorporate solid blocks of colour. The sculptures are complemented by the addition of five fixed displays providing information about Kahlo’s life and artistic career, with large-scale images of some of her most iconic paintings.

The fiberglass and hand-painted sculptural figures have been designed and manufactured under the Reunión de Papaya label in collaboration with Tminis.

Frida Kahlo
The painter, who was born and died in Coyoacán (Mexico City, 1907-1954), is an internationally renowned figure who defended the indigenous traditions of her country, while also becoming a feminist icon due to her uncompromising approach to articulating the female experience and form. The project aims to offer a faithful reflection of the difficulties Kahlo faced throughout her life: she had polio as a child and was injured in a major transport-related accident at the age of 18, as a result of which she had to undergo more than 30 operations.

Location and dates: Vivand, pedestrian commercial axis, Avinguda Carlemany of Escaldes-Engordany, until April 30, 2024.
