The descent of the Percanela Peak and the Arans gulleys is an easy route that starts at the Mas de Ribafeta (1,550m) in the parish of La Massana.
Start point: To get there we take the CG4 towards Arinsal. After Erts, still on the way to Arinsal, we come to the road to the Mas de Ribafeta. We will leave the vehicles at the end of this road (Ribafeta estate). From here we take the GR11 NE to the Coll de les Cases pass at 1,958 m. From the pass we go up northwards along the signposted ridge of the Percanela peak, and along the way we will see yellow markings that we will follow to the peak at 2,494 m. Once at the peak, we carry on a few more metres northwards at 2,550 m. From here we have access to and a view of the gulleys. We can choose between three very similar gulleys that will all leave us at the same point.
Descent: On the descent of the south-eastern gulley of the Pic de Percanela, the first 100 m are on a very wide face with a gradient of 35-40°; then it narrows and enters the gulleys between 6/8 m wide at 40-45° that go on for more than 1,000 m, ending up at the village of Arans (Hotel Cal Daina). These are very long gulleys amidst forests and with spectacular views of the Ordino valley without great technical difficulty apart from a couple of very narrow rocky passages that can easily be jumped if there is enough snow (Gulley 1, max. 2 m height).
A highly recommendable route despite the demanding 1,000 m climb, which is more than compensated by the over 1,000 m downhill making the descent one of the longest. We will have to take advantage on days of snow to 1,350 m and the arrival at Arans, where we must remember to leave a vehicle to return to the start.
