The Vall del Riu valley is a place of great scenic interest and includes the ‘estany gran’, one of the largest in Andorra with 4 hectares.
Its height makes it a route of high difficulty.
The La Vall del Riu hiking route starts in the area of els Plans, in the parish of Canillo, behind some stone houses where we find a signpost. The path starts gently following some dry stone walls, passing over the River Forat de Rius and gaining height while going into the forest of the Riu Valley, full of mountain pine, aspen and salanque. After the forest the path continues climbing northwards to the Cabin of the Riu Valley, a mountain hut with space for up to 8 people at 2,245 m. We continue over screes until we reach the first lake, and the second shortly after. Further on we will find a fork and turn to the right. We go over a small mountain pass and reach the Great Lake of the Vall del Riu, at an altitude of 2,545 metres.
The route starts by taking the road to els Plans after some stone houses with red windows (42° 34' 55",1° 38' 0").
For your safety, we recommend you do the routes at altitudes of over 1700 metres between the end of June and the end of September.
You will find further details of this and other routes in the Hiking guide Trails of Andorra.
