Jean-Jacques Sempé long made the trip from his home to the publisher’s and the magazines by bicycle. In New York, his first worry for getting around was to get a bicycle. It is natural that this travelling companion should have become part of the essence of his drawings, and it would be risky to try to count the number of bicycles he has drawn in the foreground or background of his works.
Sempé draws his surroundings with an elegant trace, aiming friendly criticism at the society around us. One of the sources for creating this view of such a personal and particular world is the Tour de France. This close relationship justified the presentation of his china ink drawings and aquarelles in a display which coincides in time with the arrival and departure of one stage of the Tour de Françe in Andorra.
