The Tobacco Museum in Sant Julià de Lòria presents Art in Portugal: 1850-1960, a retrospective of the country’s contemporary art.


Art in Portugal: 1850-1960 offers an insight into the panorama of Portuguese painting and design, reflecting the history of contemporary Portuguese art and covering a wide range of different periods and artistic styles. The exhibition comprises some 42 artworks, which together constitute a significant chronological exploration of contemporary Portuguese art up to the mid-20th century.

Art in Portugal: 1850-1960 enables visitors to enjoy artworks by (among others) Romantics such as Tomàs de Anunciaçao and Miguel Ângelo Lupi, Naturalists such as Marques de Oliveira and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Avant-Garde artists such as Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Adriano de Sousa Lopez (including the latter’s famous A blusa azul, 1925-1928), Neo-Realists such as Júlio Resende, Surrealists such as Fernando Lemos, and Geometric Abstractionists such as Nadir Afonso. All of the artworks are on loan from the Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC-MC) and the Anastácio Gonçalves Museum in Lisbon.
